The EU will continue to support Moldova’s gradual integration into the EU’s internal market across key sectors, which will stimulate economic growth and enhance Moldova’s preparedness for EU membership - António Costa

President of the European Council made this statement ahead of the 2nd EU-Moldova Summit, which will take place in Brussels on June 22 and at which he will represent the EU alongside European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. President Maia Sandu will represent Moldova at the Summit. António Costa noted that the 2nd EU-Moldova Summit in Brussels on June 22 will highlight the strategic importance of Moldova’s future in the EU and strengthen the partnership between the two sides. It will take place at a historic moment for both the EU and Moldova, following the opening of the first chapter of accession negotiations. “Enlargement is a geopolitical and strategic choice for a stronger and more secure Europe, and we are firmly committed to Moldova’s path toward the EU. Our partnership has grown closer than ever as we work together to strengthen our resilience, stability, and shared European values,” stated President of the European Council. According to him, at the Summit, leaders will assess Moldova’s progress on reforms, particularly in the areas of the rule of law and fundamental human rights, as well as in the fight against organized crime. António Costa emphasized that Moldova has made significant progress and demonstrated a firm commitment to aligning its legislation with that of the EU, despite unprecedented external pressure. He noted that the EU is ready to move forward swiftly with Moldova’s EU accession process, based on its own merits. The EU will continue to support Moldova’s gradual integration into the EU internal market in key sectors. This will benefit citizens and businesses, stimulate economic growth, and enhance Moldova’s readiness for EU membership. The EU and Moldova will strengthen cooperation to further enhance the country’s resilience. The leaders will also discuss sector-specific cooperation, including Moldova’s progress in strengthening energy security, diversifying energy sources, and improving energy efficiency. The leaders are expected to issue a joint declaration following the summit. // 17.06.2026 — InfoMarket.
