Trump-Xi Summit Seeks to Cement Stability After Rocky Stretch for Trade Ties
Day one featured a few highlights, including China’s tough stance on Taiwan
The leaders of the US and China are wrapping up the first full day of talks in Beijing, with expressions of hope from both sides about putting their economic relationship back on an even keel and the trade hostilities of the past year behind them.
Out of the gate, President Xi Jinping warned Donald Trump of a potential conflict if the Taiwan issue is mismanaged, in blunt remarks that punctuated an otherwise cordial start to the first trip to China by a sitting US president in nearly a decade.
China offered what appeared to be the summit’s first concession on Thursday: Beijing has renewed import licenses for hundreds of US beef plants, reviving trade in a meat whose cost has surged for American consumers. A pound of US ground beef cost $6.90 in April, up 27% since Trump’s second term began, according to Federal Reserve data.
