Construction of the bridge over the Prut River near Ungheni is 45% complete nearly a year after work began

As noted by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Development, this bridge is part of a highway and will provide a direct connection to the future A8 highway and the TEN-T network. The progress of work at the site was observed by Mircea Păscăluță and Nicolai Mîndra, State Secretaries at the Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Development, together with their Romanian counterpart Irinel Ionel Scrioșteanu during a monitoring visit. The delegation analyzed the method of delivering the bridge’s structural elements to maintain the pace of work and ensure compliance with the planned deadlines. At the same time, during a meeting at the Ungheni District Council, consultations were held between the relevant agencies on strategic projects aimed at establishing ties with Romania and the EU, including projects for the electrification of the European-gauge Iasi–Ungheni railway; the development of the first section of the highway in Ungheni District, including decisions regarding the access road to the new bridge. Representatives of the agencies responsible for implementing the projects participated in the discussions: the Customs Service, the Border Police, the Ungheni Mayor’s Office, and the Ungheni District Council. As previously reported, construction of the first road bridge across the Prut River near Ungheni in 60 years, connecting Moldova and Romania, officially began on April 26, 2025. The bridge will connect the village of Zagarancea in the Ungheni district (Moldova) and the commune of Golăiești in the Iași county (Romania), forming part of the Unirii (A8) highway, and will play a key role in linking the two national road networks—the Târgu Mureș – Iași – Ungheni and the future Ungheni–Chișinău highway, both with an estimated completion date of 2030. This is the first of five new bridges across the Prut River, the construction of which is planned by 2030. It was previously reported that the construction of the bridge across the Prut River near Ungheni, funded by an EU grant, is scheduled for completion in the fall of 2026. The new 261.20-meter-long bridge across the Prut will have two lanes in each direction and sidewalks. The border crossing point will be equipped with parking areas for large vehicles and passenger cars, as well as enclosed spaces designed for thorough inspections of passenger and freight vehicles. Completion of the work is scheduled for fall 2026, and the project is funded by non-repayable European funding totaling over 151.68 million Romanian lei, excluding VAT. // 24.04.2026 — InfoMarket.
