USAID grants $63 million in additional funding to help Moldova deal with crises.
The head of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Mission in Moldova, Scott Hocklander, and Finance Minister Dumitru Budianschi signed amendments to the 2016 assistance agreement the previous day, supplementing USAID's budget for development programs in Moldova with $63 million. These funds are provided by USAID to support Moldova in its European course as an accession candidate and in response to the multiple crises our country isfacing due to the war in Ukraine. According to the USAID press office, most of the amount - $46.3 million - will contribute to Moldova's sustained economic growth and help the Moldovan economy become more resilient. Specifically, this money be used to increase Moldova's long-term energy security through integration with the European energy system, increase renewable energy and attract investment in domestic energy production and energy efficiency; to introduce new technologies and innovations that will contribute to Moldova's digital economy and ensure sustainable growth; to expand business-friendly and trade-friendly reforms and reduce areas vulnerable to corruption; to improve the sustainability of the Moldovan economy; and to enhance the quality of the Moldovan economy. Another part of the allocated funds - $16.7 million - will be used for programs aimed at strengthening democracy and governance. This portion of the aid will focus on providing additional support for independent media that is more resistant to political and financial pressures and less prone to misinformation; expanding support for credible electoral processes and fair political competition; ensuring rapid response to the urgent needs of local governments facing refugee flows, including in rural areas, to be more effective, transparent and accountable, including community development, infrastructure projects and business support; deepening justice reforms. With these amendments, the total amount of grants offered by the U.S. under the assistance agreements signed in 2016 will reach $153.2 million. USAID has been assisting development projects in Moldova since 1992. Over the past 30 years, total USAID investment in economic and democratic development in Moldova has exceeded $600 million. // 18.08.2022- InfoMarket.
