The European Union will start connecting the energy systems of Ukraine and Moldova to the European continental network ENTSO-E.
This was stated by European Commissioner for Energy Kadri Simson, noting that the project to connect Ukraine's energy system to the European Continental Grid has long been a common priority as a strategic initiative to increase Ukraine's energy independence. On the day that Ukraine, together with Moldova, began to test the lockdown, which was the first step in preparing for future synchronization with the EU, Russian troops attacked Ukraine, and since then Ukraine has decided not to connect its network back to Russia and asked the EU as soon as possible perform an emergency synchronization with the European network. “European energy ministers meeting in Brussels on 28 February approved this measure and the EU will now move forward with ENTSO-E – the EU grid operators – to connect the Ukrainian grid as soon as possible. This move will also link Moldova to the EU network, another country that wants to be able to choose its energy future,” added Kadri Simson. In a separate statement, the Energy Community emphasized the importance of accelerated synchronization of the energy systems of Ukraine and Moldova with the EU. “Ensuring uninterrupted power supply in Ukraine and Moldova is also of paramount importance for the security of the citizens of the European Union and other contracting parties of the Energy Community. Continuous operation of the system must be ensured to maintain the safety of Ukraine's nuclear power plants. Moreover, the shutdown of the Ukrainian system will lead to a shutdown in Moldova as well. Against the background of these serious threats, the accelerated synchronization of Ukraine and Moldova seems to be the best way to prevent a possible shutdown of their energy systems due to a protracted armed conflict,” the Energy Community noted.// 01.03.2022 — InfoMarket
