Moldova will buy gas from international traders in case Gazprom stops supplying gas starting from May 1 while seven companies have expressed their readiness to supply gas to our country - Andrei Spinu.

Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Infrastructure and Regional Development said at a press conference on Wednesday that the abovementioned companies were major international trader companies from Romania, Poland, the Netherlands and other countries. Some of them have already been supplying gas to Moldova since last October, when Gazprom limited gas supplies to the country. Andrei Spinu said Energocom is now pre-selecting these international traders and will buy gas from them if Gazprom breaks or suspends the contract with Moldova and stops gas supplies from May 1. He noted that the Moldovan government and Moldovagaz have earlier sent several letters to Gazprom, asking for an extension of the deadline for the audit of the historic debt for the gas consumed on the right bank of the NIstru River, in order to specify the amount of debt and agree on the settlement, but the Russian gas holding has not yet replied. At the same time, Andrei Spinu emphasized that, irrespective of Gazprom's further actions, the Moldovan government is prepared for any scenario and is ready to buy gas from alternative suppliers. At the same time, Deputy Premier noted that the gas price on the market has decreased and will not differ much from the current price of gas from Gazprom. In April 2022, the purchasing price of Russian gas from Gazprom for Moldovagaz was $1193 per thousand cubic meters, while the average market price was $1226 per thousand cubic meters. At the same time, Andrei Spinu said that the price volatility may be high and unpredictable, and it is hard to predict the future price dynamics. He also explained that Moldova will need much less gas in May as 24 million cubic meters are stored in the Romanian and Moldovan gas transportation systems while the total demand in May is 45 million cubic meters. Taking into account that the Government has shifted Termoelectrica from gas to fuel oil, the volume required to provide gas to the right bank of the Nistru River in May will be reduced from 45 million cubic meters to 32 million cubic meters, of which 24 million cubic meters are already available in the country. Thus, about 75% of all the gas demand in May has already been met. Deputy Prime Minister also reminded that the Moldovan authorities will receive a 150 million euros loan to create gas reserves for the heating season. Energocom is getting ready to buy gas on the market, and potential gas suppliers show an increased interest in supplying gas to Moldova. Andrei Spinu reiterated that irrespective of Gazprom's decision and the situation on the market, Moldova will be endowed with gas and electric energy. According to him, the prices on the market are abnormally high after the war in Ukraine started, but now there is no other way and we have to be ready to pay the price for the country's freedom and independence. Deputy Prime Minister drew attention to the fact that now the situation is unprecedented, when despite the reduction of gas prices in the market, its cost in the spring and summer period is higher than in the winter, the heating season, which has never happened before in all of Europe. //20.04.2022 - InfoMarket.
